RESUMO

PURPOSE: Specimens of Elthusa from trashfish of the Indian SW coast were described as a new parasitic cymothoid, Elthusa nemo sp. nov., (Crustacea: Isopoda). Later, the branchial cavity of the Blotchfin dragonet Callionymus filamentosus Valenciennes, 1837 were documented as its micro- and macro-habitat (host). METHODS: Fresh/live specimens of unidentified cymothoid samples were collected from the trash fishes obtained from Neendakara (08°30.0' N 76°53.30' E) fish landing centre, Kollam district, Kerala state, southwest coast of India. After a long search for the host species, we recovered the isopod from the branchial cavity of the deep-sea fish Callionymus filamentosus Valenciennes, 1837 (Callionymiformes: Callionymidae). The new species is described and illustrated based on ovigerous females. RESULTS: Elthusa nemo sp. nov., has the following sets of combinations of characters: body slightly twisted, elongated, dorsal surfaces smooth, nearly twice as long as greatest width; pleon short, ~ 14% body length, 0.8 times as wide as pereon maximum width; widest at pleonite 2 and narrowest at pleonite 1; only pleonite 1, laterally overlapped by pereonite 7 posterolateral expansion and coxa 7; presence of appendix masculina on pleopod 2; uropods 0.8 times as the length of pleotelson; antenna with two plumose setae on article 4. CONCLUSION: Elthusa nemo sp. nov., is the sixth species of the genus known from Indian waters.

The present study aimed to formulate diets using soybean dreg to replace part of fish meal (30% and 60%) and to incorporate dietary supplement to the diets with papain to promote fish growth and decrease total cost of feed formulations for gold-lined seabream (Rhabdosargus sarba). In Experiment 1, papain was used to supplement feeds containing soybean dreg to replace part of the fish meal. In Experiment 2, bromelain and a microalgae supplement were used to supplement feeds containing soybean substitutes as a replacement of the fish meal. Results from Experiment 1 indicated that the growth performance of fish fed diets with up to 60% replacement of fishmeal with soybean residues predigested with papain were not significantly different (p > 0.05) from the control (a formula developed by Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), which contained 49.4% fishmeal, 45.2% raw trashfish, 4.9% alpha starch and 0.5% vitamin premix). It indicated that plant protein predigested with a small amount of enzyme supplement (e.g. papain) can be used to replace fish meal in traditional fish diets, and the cost could subsequebtly be reduced. In Experiment 2, the diets containing bromelain, soybean dreg pre-digested with bromelain and supplemented with microalgae resulted in significantly better growth performance than other diet groups. Results from the present study suggested that predigesting soybean dreg with enzymes could replace up to 60% fishmeal in the moist pellets while achieving economic benefits.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi registrar a ocorrência de larva de nematoide da família Raphidascarididae, Hysterothylacium deardorffoverstreetorum, em bijupirá Rachycentron canadum (Linnaeus, 1766), criado e alimentado com ração e "trashfish" em fazendas marinhas localizadas no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, alertando para possíveis riscos zoonóticos ao se usar esse tipo de alimentação para criação de peixes. Foram necropsiados 15 animais. Os parasitas encontrados foram coletados, fixados e, posteriormente, conservados em álcool a 70°GL, clarificados e identificados. Em todos os animais necropsiados, apenas um espécime estava parasitado com uma larva de Hysterothylacium deardorffoverstreetorum na serosa do fígado do peixe e conclui-se que a presença desse parasita em bijupirá de criação alimentado por "trashfish pode estar associada à alimentação, indicando, assim, um potencial risco zoonótico.(AU)


The aim of this study was to record the occurrence of nematode larvae of the Raphidascarididae family, Hysterothylacium deardorffoverstreetorum in cobia Rachycentron canadum (Linnaeus, 1766) grown and fed with trashfish in marine farms located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, warning regarding possible zoonotic risk using this type of food for fish. Fifteen animals were necropsied. Parasites found were collected, fixed and later preserved in alcohol 70°GL, clarified and identified. In all animals necropsied, only one specimen was infested with a Hysterothylacium deardorffoverstreetorum larvae in the serosa of fish liver. It is concluded that the presence of the parasite in cobia culture fed with trashfish may be associated with a potential zoonotic risk.(AU)
